Let’s celebrate 2018 with the kick-off event of Civic Space Watch! The European Civic Forum (ECF) cordially invites you to the launch of its newest platform on Thursday 18 January 2018 at 6.30 p.m.
Civic Space Watch is a new online tool to collect and organise resources on European civic space. According to CIVICUS, civic space is “a set of universally-accepted rules, which allow people to organise, participate and communicate with each other freely and without hindrance, and in doing so, influence the political and social structures around them”. Civic space is essential to the well-functioning of democracy.
The European Union is today witnessing an erosion of civic space within its borders – Poland being a well-known case but not an exception. Anti-NGOs laws are not the only tools that governments use to challenge civil society organisations and actors from pursuing their mission to defend Human rights and democratic values. Across Europe, smear campaigns, attacks of whistleblowers, and isolation also contribute to delegitimise civic efforts to hold governments accountable for their actions and the European Union case-by-case approach has so far been unable to invert these worrisome trends.
How can the European Union protect civic space in Europe? How can civic society organisations strengthen their advocacy activities concerning civic space to the European institutions? How can we increase transnational solidarity among national civil societies? Come and join the discussion!
We very much hope you can join us. Please confirm your participation as soon as possible. For more information about the work of the European Civic Forum please visit civic-forum.eu or follow us on Twitter @ForCivicEU.
