The European Civic Micro-Grants, an initiative led by ECF, plays a pivotal role in strengthening democracy and civic engagement across Europe. By providing crucial financial support to organisations, the micro-grants empower local movements to address pressing societal and political challenges, build engaged communities, and actively participate in shaping European policies. Last year’s projects, funded by these micro-grants, have demonstrated the transformative power of targeted support in fostering civic resilience and engagement. Below are highlights of some of the most impactful initiatives.
Novact: The Nonviolence Factory (TNF) Empowers Human Rights Defenders
Novact’s Nonviolence Factory, held in Barcelona in November 2024, focused on countering authoritarianism by equipping activists with the tools needed to defend democracy. The event included capacity-building sessions, providing training in nonviolent action, strategic litigation, and context analysis, while also addressing the impact of mass surveillance on civic spaces. The event was aimed at fostering collaboration among human rights defenders, prioritising the inclusion of marginalised groups such as women, LGBTIQ+ communities, and environmental activists. It was rounded off by the presentation of a report on mass surveillance to the Catalan Parliament. Read more about TNF!
Civic Alliance Latvia: Monitoring Civil Society Space
Civic Alliance Latvia developed the “Civic Compass Report,” a comprehensive tool for monitoring the state of civil society in Latvia. The report analysed critical areas such as freedom of association, assembly, and speech, engaging over 50 stakeholders in its creation. Its actionable recommendations have informed policy discussions and provided a roadmap for improving the civil society sector in Latvia.
Human Rights Cities Network: CAREinCities
This initiative focused on enhancing participatory human rights monitoring in Ghent (Belgium) and Padua (Italy). By bridging civil society organisations, local authorities, and academia, the project facilitated dialogue and mutual learning. Key outcomes included capacity-building trainings, the publication of actionable recommendations, and the establishment of a foundation for future collaboration on human rights monitoring.
French Federation of Europa Houses: Strengthening Civic Engagement
The French Federation of Europa Houses worked to raise public awareness about European political issues and counter anti-democratic narratives. Through debates, exhibitions, and educational activities, the project strengthened the capacity of Europa Houses to engage citizens and promote democratic values. It also fostered network-building among European partners, amplifying the reach and impact of their efforts.
La Ligue de l’Enseignement: Fostering Dialogue on Democracy
La Ligue de l’Enseignement organised a high-level conference to discuss threats to democracy and civil liberties in the context of the 2024 European elections. The event brought together experts from across Europe to share strategies for combating the rise of far-right ideologies and defending democratic freedoms. The conference reached 230 participants, inspiring dialogue and action among local federations.
ARCI: Sabir Festival Celebrates a Decade of Advocacy
The 10th edition of the Sabir Festival, supported by the micro-grants, brought together over 2,000 participants to address migration, racism, and human rights in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The festival featured 64 events, including seminars, workshops, and art installations, and served as a vital platform for civil society organisations to collaborate and advocate for justice and solidarity.
