Ways of Europe: Reflecting on the Calais and Dunkirk meeting

27 November 2025 | Members' Corner

After Lampedusa in June, the “Ways of Europe” project stopped off in Calais and Dunkirk on September 29 and 30. Coordinated by the Ligue de l’enseignement with the support of the local departmental Fédération 59, this meeting brought together young people from France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, and Cyprus to discuss issues related to respect for human rights and the safety of migration routes.

After Lampedusa in June 2025 (a hotspot for migration and solidarity issues), the “Ways of Europe” project stopped off in Calais and Dunkirk on September 29 and 30. These two cities, symbols of migration issues in France, served as a backdrop for promoting essential values: solidarity, respect for human rights, safe migration routes, and consideration of environmental issues.

Over the course of two days, young people (from France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, and Cyprus) took part in several workshops combining field activities and discussions on the challenges and prospects for the future of Europe. They drew up a manifesto for political decision-makers using the “dialogues of the future” method.

The first day was devoted to icebreaker activities and a radio workshop on creating podcasts about just transition, sustainability, and migration. Participants worked in thematic subgroups before coming together for a collective review. The final podcast will be released shortly.

On the second day, participants alternated between immersion at the Auberge des Migrants (cooking, sorting, meal preparation) and workshops led by the Ligue de l’enseignement and the Europe & International department of the confederal center on the history and challenges of migration, with the co-creation of a manifesto. The day ended with a joint review at Le Channel, Calais’ national theater, which is committed to working with audiences in migration situations.

What’s next? The next stop for the project will be Budapest. The event will aim to develop strategies to combat violations of the rule of law, safeguard democracy, and promote peace.
