Gong: Political and media education on the eve of the election

26 February 2025 | Members' Corner

At the start of 2025, Gong organized a media literacy workshop for a group of interested citizens in Zagreb, where local elections will soon take place. This program provided an opportunity for citizens to raise awareness about digital challenges and threats to unbiased and accurate information during the election campaign.

Participants discussed the difference between misinformation and disinformation, how to recognize disinformation in online spaces, and the role of AI in generating disinformation. The workshop also introduced topics such as defamation and smear campaigns, the use of fake profiles and bots, the abuse of social media for electoral manipulation. We presented our examples of detecting digital manipulations during election periods. Gong is one of the first organizations in the EU to apply the DSA, and as a result of our reports, big tech platforms have removed fake profiles and false news during election campaigns.

In addition, Gong organized a political education program for a group of teachers to help them enhance their knowledge of democracy, policies, and elections. By providing educational materials and useful information, Gong supports teachers in creating higher-quality lessons for students and equipping them with the knowledge needed for better civic participation and voting.
